About

Rare fish. Unusual plants. A fairly unreasonable commitment to both.
I'm Jennifer, the person behind Critical Mass Biophilia.
This is where my longstanding fascination with rare and unusual living things has taken on a life of its own: a 40-tank fishroom and an increasingly ambitious botanical collection.
I spend a considerable amount of time researching, keeping, breeding, growing, and generally fussing over these collections. Sometimes it gets a little out of hand.
The Fishroom
Fish are at the core of Critical Mass. I run a dedicated breeding program for rare freshwater species, specializing in corydoras, plecos, and otos.
My goal is simple: get less common fish into the hands of good hobbyists and reduce the hobby's reliance on wild-caught imports.
The Botanical Collection
The plants were the inevitable next step. My botanical work centers on Alocasia, prioritizing unusual forms, exceptional variegation, and premium genetics for long-term mother stock. If I have to buy three of the same cultivar just to keep the best one, I will.
This is apparently a valid business model.
It yields a strictly curated collection, allowing me to share established plants, custom corm propagation kits, and the specialized supplies used to grow them.
