Callichthyidae · Brazil · C125 "Red"
Aspidoras raimundi C125 "Red" is a distinctive captive-bred color strain of a small Brazilian armored catfish. Unlike the normally patterned C125, the red variety exhibits warm reddish coloration and red eyes, giving it a striking appearance quite unlike the more familiar Corydoradinae.
The red strain was first reported by a European breeder after unusually colored individuals appeared spontaneously among offspring of wild-type C125. Subsequent selective breeding established the coloration as a recognizable aquarium strain.
Originally known in the hobby as Aspidoras sp. C125, these fish are now recognized as Aspidoras raimundi (Steindachner, 1907). The 2022 taxonomic revision of Aspidoras synonymized several previously recognized species with A. raimundi, and both C125 and CW119 are now included within the species.
The species occurs naturally in Brazil, including the Rio Parnaíba basin, although the precise wild locality of the original C125 aquarium population remains uncertain. The red variety is a captive-bred development rather than a naturally documented geographic form.
Our C125 "Red" are bred and raised at Critical Mass Biophilia in Eugene, Oregon.
An unusual little fish. Entirely worth the fuss.
