Callichthyidae · Río Tomo drainage, Orinoco basin, Colombia · CW217

Hoplisoma sp. aff. concolor 'Rio Tomo', designated CW217, is a recently introduced and still scientifically undescribed Corydoradinae from eastern Colombia. Closely related to Hoplisoma concolor, this striking fish is distinguished by its contrasting coloration, with warm coppery and bronze tones against a darker body.

First introduced to the aquarium trade in 2025, CW217 has attracted considerable interest among Corydoras enthusiasts for its unusual appearance, limited documented distribution, and unresolved taxonomic identity.

A Recent Discovery From the Río Tomo

According to information published by Aquarium Glaser in October 2025, CW217 was collected from a small tributary of the Río Tomo locally known as Caño Negro. The collection site was described as having exceptionally clear water.

Although CW217 closely resembles Hoplisoma concolor, its distinctive coloration has not been reported in typical populations of that species. The two forms were also reported to be absent from one another's collection locality.

Corydoras specialist Ian Fuller assigned the designation CW217 to distinguish this form while its taxonomic status remains unresolved. Whether it will eventually be described as a separate species remains to be determined.

The genus Hoplisoma was resurrected in the 2024 revision of Corydoradinae, placing CW217 among the short-snouted species formerly included in the broad genus Corydoras.

Juveniles at Critical Mass Biophilia

These are juvenile CW217, offered while still growing toward their mature size and coloration.

Like other Hoplisoma, CW217 is a peaceful, social bottom-dwelling fish best maintained in groups over fine sand, with clean, well-oxygenated water and a varied diet.

An unusually beautiful addition to the hobby, and an opportunity to maintain a recently documented form whose scientific identity is still being investigated.

A remarkable Cory. A very recent chapter in Corydoradinae history.
